Growing up in the early ‘50s in Hoboken, New Jersey was an interesting experience. Walking home from Wallace #6 Public School could, and often did, quickly turn into a hands-on lesson in streetwise self-defense. One kid we called ‘Spike’ always seemed ready to leap out at me from a behind a stoop with a couple of his crazy hoodlum buddies.
My dad and older brother Al’s guidance helped me to develop a keen awareness that was essential for surviving and thriving in our neighborhood: an awareness that prepared me for unexpected challenges no matter how big or how many were waiting just around the corner, across the street or from behind a stoop! And my Mom made sure that I knew how to serve up a healthy serving of compassion for others even under the most difficult circumstances. She also taught me self-confidence and the belief that I could do anything I wanted to, and as I grew up I continued to assume that I could.
As a teenager, in New Jersey the beaches of Southern California were a very, very distant dream. But the ‘Beach Boys’ and their ‘surfer’ music brought it closer and closer in my mind’s eye. As soon as I got out of the U.S. Navy in 1969, I took off in my 1966 Corvette roadster and headed for California! I never got to meet the Beach Boys, but I quickly fell in love with my new home and all it had to offer!
Today, my childhood and young adult experiences are in my past, and my guiding lights and best fans, my mom, dad, brother Al, and godfather Uncle Frank have moved on to whatever awaits us after this life, but their influence still guides me in a lot of ways.
The challenges in life are ever changing, but thankfully they never vanish entirely. I bet this is true in your life, too. Something (or someone) always waits over the next hill or around the corner. ‘Opportunity’ may not be ‘Spike’ and his little band of hoodlums, but something equally as daunting!
I believe the question isn’t so much, “What could it be?” or “When will it happen?” — but, “How will I respond to it?”
People often ask me how I became a motivational speaker and author. Well, it certainly wasn’t from my youthful interest in literature or drama — I didn’t have any! And it wasn’t because I had an innate gift for motivating others: I had my hands full just getting out of Hoboken without a criminal record!
I am a late bloomer. I found my real passion at age 40, and only after serving my country, having numerous jobs in manufacturing, and a successful career as a computer salesperson.
I truly believe I can do anything I desire, and I believe you can too!
